Guardian Monitor Review:

Summary:
Guardian Monitor is a good monitoring solution and is more geared for parental monitoring, however it lacks some features found in our higher ranked products.

Features:
The first thing we noticed is that the shortest time interval for screenshot recording is 1 minute. This may generate too few screenshots to determine enough of what the user is doing. Also, there is no event trigger-based monitoring and it will not monitor MySpace chat or MySpace email messages. However, it appears to do a good job of monitoring other popular IM(chat) programs, web history and keystrokes. The basic version will monitor POP mail (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.) but if you want to monitor web-based email such as Hotmail, Yahoo mail, etc, you will have to purchase their Pro version. On the plus side, one neat feature they have is a warning log which lists websites that were visited which are associated with various categories - adult, violence, drugs, gambling. This is useful for parental monitoring purposes. You can also add specific words for the warning log.

Usability / Management:
The Guardian Monitor management interface is invoked using a secret hotkey combination along with a password (set at install) at the computer being monitored. The user interface is pretty easy to use and navigate. The main screen gives you a summary of recorded data for each category. You can then click each to see detailed information. The monitor settings are pretty basic, for each category, you can either enable or disable - there are no advanced options. There is no remote reporting or configuration capability. But they do offer a Pro version which will send you periodic emails.

Detectability:
Strangely, we were able to see the Guardian Monitor exe in task manager, even in stealth mode. If undectability is important to you, this could be a problem.

Support:
The included help documentation is good in explaining all settings. They also have a fairly decent online knowledgebase. Their email support is also pretty quick.

Guardian Monitor Minimum Requirements:
Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP
200MHz or faster CPU
32 MB of RAM
10MB hard drive space
internet connection
